What it is

A filling replaces the part of a tooth lost to decay or a chip. We use composite resin matched to your tooth colour, bonded in place and shaped so it feels like it was always there.

What to expect

  1. The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic. We use a numbing gel first so the injection itself is barely felt.

  2. Decay is removed and the tooth is cleaned and prepared, which takes a few minutes.

  3. Resin is placed in layers, hardened with a light, then shaped and polished to match your bite.

  4. Numbness wears off in two to three hours. You can eat on the filling as soon as the feeling comes back.

Common questions

Do you still use silver (amalgam) fillings?

No. All our fillings are tooth-coloured composite. We can also replace old amalgam fillings if they are failing or you would prefer them gone.

How long does a filling last?

Typically seven to ten years, often longer with good care. Large fillings may eventually need a crown.

Will it be sensitive afterwards?

Some sensitivity to cold for a week or two is normal, especially with deeper fillings. If it persists or you feel a high spot when biting, come back and we will adjust it.
